This workshop – developed under the lead of Dr Julie Smith (University of Cambridge) – focusses on the impact of referenda on parliamentary democracy, notably in the light of the recent Brexit vote. It will look in particular at the interaction of plebiscitary and parliamentary democracy, with reference to the UK as well as other recent referendum experiences, and at the consequences of the UK’s vote to leave the EU for the United Kingdom itself, the European Union and other EU Member States.
